Best Practices
PET/CT Symposium -Dr. Paul Shreve is one of the leaders for the annual Best Practices in PET/CT Symposium. The industry sponsored focus group meeting brings together leading practitioners to establish the best standard of practice for the use of PET/CT imaging in the care of cancer patients. Dr. Shreve also coedited a textbook called “Clinical PET-CT in Radiology: Integrated Imaging in Oncology“.
Peer Learning – ARS was an early adopter of the just culture environment designed to identify errors and near-miss events in a deliberately nonpunitive manner, avoiding unproductive blame and instead focusing on error prevention and fostering a culture of continuous quality improvement. As one of the early practices to embark on this transformation, the practice has made several contributions to the American College of Radiology Peer Learning Network.
A Collaborative Environment
The size of our practice and scope of subspecialists on staff provides a unique and in depth knowledge base. Sharing these resources with the medical community is one of our top priorities.
For decades, we have been involved in teaching and mentoring medical students and residents through Grand Rapids Medical Education Partners (formerly GRMERC), collaboration with medical equipment developers, and coordination with the healthcare systems we serve. Following are some highlights of our educational activities.
Michigan State University College of Human Medicine
The headquarters for the College of Human Medicine, the Secchia Center, is located in Grand Rapids along the “medical mile.” With its opening in 2010, MSU College of Human Medicine achieved its expansion goal of 800 students in the fall of 2013, completing the nation’s largest allopathic medical school expansion.
The use of evidence based techniques to improve the delivery of health care is a primary focus of scholarly inquiry that has immediate impact on improved patient care. Investigation of these techniques in the management of common diagnostic problems such as stroke is underway.
Western Michigan University Medical School
Western Michigan University held the groundbreaking ceremony for the Homer Stryker School of Medicine on the W. E. Upjohn Campus in Kalamazoo in 2012. The inaugural class of 54 students arrived in August of 2014. Dr. Andreea Moore currently serves as the co-chair leading the Department of Radiology and department faculty in teaching medical students, as well as overseeing scholarly activities, research, professional and community service events.
Residency Programs
Spectrum Diagnostic Radiology Residency
The Spectrum Health/Michigan State University College of Human Medicine Diagnostic Radiology Residency (https://www.spectrumhealth.org/medical-education/residencies/diagnostic-radiology-residency offers a robust training experience with a case volume to trainee ratio among the top in the nation. This includes cases in rare diseases and post-transplant studies.
The program is four years long, plus an integrated transitional year and accepts three residents each year. Conferences are held throughout the academic year, with an average of eight hours of conferences per week. The core curriculum includes physics, didactic subspecialty lectures and interactive case conferences in a rotating 2-year curriculum that covers all aspects of diagnostic and interventional radiology over the resident’s four years. Daily didactic lectures and/or interactive conferences are provided to ensure that graduates are well prepared to practice radiology independently. 
Dr. Drew Woodrow currently serves as the Program Director role and Dr. Jamie Frost serves as the Associate Program Director.

Spectrum Integrated Interventional Radiology Residency
In 2019 ARS partnered with Michigan State University and Spectrum Health to create a six year integrated interventional radiology residency program (https://www.spectrumhealth.org/medical-education/residencies/interventional-radiology-residency) The six-year program includes an integrated intern year modeled after the preliminary general surgery residency program. We offer a broad exposure to all image-guided procedures with exceptional opportunities in oncologic, musculoskeletal, vascular, thromboembolic and palliative/pain intervention in addition to robust training in diagnostic radiology. ARS physicians Jim Morrison, MD and Jarrod MacFarlane, DO serve as Program Director and Associate Program Director. The program was approved by the ACGME in January and matched the first class of residents in March of 2021.
McLaren Greater Lansing Diagnostic Radiology Residency
ARS is partnering with Michigan State University and McLaren Healthcare to open a diagnostic radiology residency at McLaren Greater Lansing with a target starting date of July 2023. The program will be four years long with plans to accept 3 residents each year. ARS physicians David Rawson, DO and Aaron Gibson, DO will serve as Program Director and Associate Program Director.
